Autonomous fault management for deep space
Seven real spacecraft. Each one flown twice.
- Where they really are. Voyager 1 and 2, New Horizons, Juno, Europa Clipper, OSIRIS-APEX and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter at today's positions from JPL Horizons, up to 24 light-hours from Earth. Three of them were added after the flight code was frozen.
- Two copies of every craft. One carries oracle7-deepspace: it confirms a fault, simulates every admissible response on an onboard model, and acts. The other carries a simplified safe-mode baseline: any confirmed limit violation puts it in safe mode to wait for Earth. Real flight fault protection also has fault-specific responses; this baseline shows what safe mode alone costs.
- Break something. Inject a fault and watch who fixes it, how fast, and what it costs. Then ask the spacecraft why it did what it did.
